Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without wind. We are useless.
– C.H. Spurgeon
I remember reading the Bible in high school. But no matter how I read it, what I got was just names, stories about Jesus and the Israelites. I was not able to connect the narratives. Additionally, I did not comprehend the entire essence of why the Bible was written. In the end, I just saw it as a big book with lots of good stories.
Bible Reading
Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Acts 1:4-5,8. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Acts 1:3: Why People Do Not Believe In Evidence?
You Will Not Be Alone
According to John, Jesus promised, I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you (John 14:18). Many people profess that they are Christians but do not live by the Holy Spirit. Why?
For this reason, that they have not genuinely repented from their sins and believe not in the saving power of Jesus Christ. Additionally, others continue sinning with a false notion of how salvation works. People believe that when they pray the ‘sinner’s prayer’, then they are free from the wrath of God, even if they pursue a worldly attitude.
In other words, the Holy Spirit dwells in people who have wholeheartedly repented, believed that Jesus died on the cross for their sins and live their lives following Christ’s examples. As it is written, and I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them (Ezekiel 36:27).
Is The Holy Spirit For Everyone?
The Holy Spirit sent to Christ-followers who surrender theirs lives in doing the will of the Father. It is written, 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Thus, we can say that the Holy Spirit dwells in us. However, there is a big BUT for this.
We know that the Triune God is holy and pure. Therefore, we can say that if you have not accepted Jesus to clean your soul with His precious blood, the Holy Spirit will not reside in you. Also, we have to understand that God may direct non-Christians to be an instrument of His sovereign plan. An example of this is Cyrus the Great of Persia (Ezra 1:1-3).
Reflection
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV
