Are You Serving The Eternal King?

There is a difference between knowing God and knowing about God. When you truly know God, you have the energy to serve Him, boldness to share Him, and contentment in Him.

– J.J. Packer.

Some of us think that when we think we believe in Jesus, that is the utmost thing we can do. Furthermore, we forget that when we believe in Him, we have to serve His name. Likewise, believing without serving is like faith without works. And James describes it as a dead faith (James 2:26).

Bible Reading

Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of 2 Samuel 9:11. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: Smoking Or Non-Smoking? Where Is Your Eternal Rest?

Ziba’s example of serving the king

Ziba’s master was not David. He served under the reign of King Saul. But because Saul turned away from God, Jerusalem was passed over to David to rule. Moreover, David spared some of Saul’s descendants out of his friendship with Jonathan. Including Ziba, and his sons and all that was left of them to serve Saul’s grandson.

“According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.”, this statement of Ziba showed his acknowledgement that David now us the king in whom he serves. The change of allegiance was not brought about fear for one’s life, rather a witness of the compassion David showed Jonathan’s household.

Serving the Eternal King

David is a Christ-like figure in the Bible. Not that he was perfect. Everyone that knows the story of David understands that he is far from perfect. Nevertheless, he was considered Christ-like because of His fear of the Lord, and how he tried to seek after God.

We should be like King David on this matter, seeking and serving after our Eternal King. Further, the Eternal King, who showed compassion for all of us and saved us from the grasp of hell. Jesus has said,  If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him (John 12:26). Do not be afraid of following Christ. Be more afraid of what will happen if you do not serve Him.

Reflection

This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.
  1. Who are you serving?
  2. What is your takeaway from today’s verse?
  3. Are you serving the Eternal King? Accept Jesus Now.

Erwina Gagin

Born and raised in a catholic family, I learned about God at an early age. I also studied in catholic schools which means I get to study the catholic traditions, practices and saints (deities). I grew up knowing God, Jesus, Mary and the saints and praying or venerating them. At a young age, I would regularly attend mass, pray devotionals to different saints and pray the rosary, which I thought were essentials to show one’s love and honour to God. But often times, I would still feel empty and uncertain of what lies ahead. I started reading the bible when I started to date my husband, with the purpose to show him that I can defend catholic teachings. But the more I study the scriptures the more I have questions about what I thought I know about my faith. It was in the year 2016 at the age of 27, I was born again. I cannot cite the exact date of my conversion as it happened in subtle manner. I know Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, guides me in studying God’s word to know the truth about Him.
