Are You Wise Enough To Understand The Gospel?

Whenever the true message of the cross is abolished, the anger of hypocrites and heretics eases and all things seem to be at peace.

– Martin Luther

I met a few people who claimed to have read the Bible cover to cover. Yet, they do not believe in Christ. Others have read it but only accepted some of its contents. Furthermore, some heard of the Gospel but did not give credence that it is factual. Worst deemed it as rubbish.

I thank God that had called me to be aware of Him, through my parents, at a young age. Moreover, that the Holy Spirit changed me and made me saw the wretchedness of my life. And I sought Jesus Christ to be saved.

Bible Reading

Today’s devotional reading is from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 1:14-19. Please, read our recent devotional from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 1:9: Why People Can Not be Faithful?

True Wisdom Versus Philosophy

According to Merriam Webster, philosophy is a ‘pursuit of wisdom’. Additionally, it is a ‘search for a general understanding of values and reality by chiefly speculative rather than observational means’. Yet, people of the 21st century take philosophy with regard and the Good News of Christ as something of less or no value. In pursuit of knowledge, we have neglected where true wisdom comes from.

In Psalm 119:105 we read, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. This means that God’s words will direct our ways. However, this only applies when a person studies His words. It is comprehensible in 1 Corinthians 1:18, for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. See the logic in this passage? I once did not understand the scriptures. Not until I got saved and the Holy Spirit has provided the comprehension I needed.

Essence Of The Cross

Jesus taught us that there are only two ways in life. First is the way to destruction. Second is the narrow path that leads to God (Matthew 7:13-14). Proud and foolish people who do not trust the message of the cross are walking on the first path.

Paul in verse 17 clarified that Jesus Christ had called him to preach the Gospel. He did not come in his name but of Christ crucified. The essence of the cross is the redemptive love of God the Father, through His only begotten Son – Jesus Christ. Further, Jesus Christ, God in human form, came down to live a sinless life on earth to be a perfect sacrifice for our sins. And whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have eternal life (John 3:16).

Reflection

This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV
  1. What is the true value of the cross for you?
  2. Do you believe the entire contents of the Bible?
  3. How is your Bible reading and study time?
  4. Where is the source of your knowledge and wisdom?
  5. Have you chosen the path you want to take? Accept Jesus Now.

Prayer

Almighty and loving Father, we adore your precious name. We thank you for the love you have given us, through Jesus. O Lord, Jesus Christ, thank you for your saving grace. Guide us as we walk in your path all the days of our life. O Holy Spirit, thank you for reproving us when we sin and convicting us to know more about Christ and walk in His ways.

Forgive us for our many trespasses (mention your sins). We acknowledge our faults and repent from these. Give us a new heart that loves pure things. All these we pray in the saving name of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
