Choose Between Fearing God Or The World

The remarkable thing about God is that when you fear God, you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else.

– Oswald Chambers.

Fear is something that everyone feels no matter how brave you think you are. We have to note though if the fear that we feel is something that will help us or hinder us from improving. I like how Ray Comfort presents fear in his evangelization. He highlights the fear of standing at the edge of a cliff a good fear for it warns us to step back to spare our lives. Then, he relates it to the Ten Commandments.

Bible Reading

Today’s devotional reading is from the 2nd Book of Kings 6:16. Please, read our recent devotional from the 1st Letter of Peter 1:18-19: We Are Ransomed By The Blood Of Jesus Christ

Fear of the Lord God

Elisha’s followers were overwhelmed with fear when he saw their enemies encamped outside their shelter. Elisha comforted him by saying fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. Of course, Elisha was not talking about the physical number for they were outnumbered. He was talking about the heavenly hosts that were there to aid them.

It is written that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). Elisha had wisdom on their situation that the Lord will not forsake them. And he was given this wisdom for her feared the Lord God of Israel.

Overwhelming fear of the world

Oswald Chambers is on point when he compared our fear of the Lord and fearing everything else. Often, we get so caught up in the worries and fear of the unknown that we lose our focus on Jesus Christ. When overwhelmed with fear, we forget that we have a God that is sovereign and powerful.

Keep in mind what Paul said to Timothy, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7). Therefore, let us fear and honour the Lord our God for He is sovereign and powerful. Submit your lives to Him, and He will keep you in His hands.

Reflection

This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.
  1. What do you fear the most in your life?
  2. How would you rationalize this fear?
  3. When did you experience fear as a good thing?
  4. Why do you think it is important to fear the Lord? Watch this.
  5. Have you surrendered your life to Jesus? Accept Jesus Now.

Prayer

Father, please forgive me when I give in to fear and worry instead of stepping out in faith and believing You. Help me learn how to capture my thoughts and train them to focus on You. I want to become a man/woman who trusts You – no matter what. My faith is small, but I now choose to place it in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
