To be Christians under the Law of grace does not mean to wander unbridled outside the Law but to be engrafted in Christ, by whose grace we are free from the curse of the Law, and by whose Spirit we have the Law engraved upon our hearts.
– John Calvin.
Two days ago, we commemorated the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. His resurrection was the redemption from the curse of the Law for those who believe in Him. But the question, do Christians have to follow the Law?, often confuses us as to the purpose of the Law.
Bible Reading
Today’s devotional reading is from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians 3:13. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Job 14:10-13: What Takes Place In Death?
Christ Redeemed Us From The Curse Of The Law
It is written, if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree (Deuteronomy 21:22). This was the fate of Jesus. However, there is one thing different He did not commit any crime nor sin against the Law. He had died on the cross in our place to redeem us from the curse of the Law. Moreover, He had sealed His redeeming acts by His resurrection.
Luke wrote, the God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree (Acts 5:30). According to John MacArthur, Jesus’ resurrection is the very foundation of the Christian faith, for without Jesus’ resurrection Christianity is worthless. Furthermore, His resurrection became our redemption and defeated the curse of the Law.
Our Actions Following Our Redemption From The Law Through Christ
When you have repented and believe in Jesus Christ’s salvific work, you are redeemed from the curse of the Law. However, if you have not, you will not be able to partake in the fruits of Jesus’ resurrection. Therefore, I encourage you to set aside your pride, especially your intellectual pride, repent from your sins and place your faith in Jesus Christ. Accept Jesus Now.
The next thing we do is live in the Spirit. Let us walk every day under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When events in life make you think better than others, use the Law as your mirror to ground you back to the reality of your life. Moreover, we should use the Law to point others to Jesus Christ. Read more about the Law given to Moses and how it applies to believers and non-believers alike.
Reflection
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV
