The first requisite of stewardship is to give ourselves to God. Thus, a logical recognition of God’s absolute ownership should follow.
– Stephen F. Olford.
Have you ever wondered what is our responsibility to animals? Are they really our ancestors as evolutionism says so? If they are, why we cannot see any monkeys evolving into humans? When I was taught that humans are to be responsible stewards of the earth but never understood the task. Immersing in the word of God shed light on what this stewardship entails.
Bible Reading
Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Genesis 1:26. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Nehemiah 8:10: When You Understand The Law, Rejoice!
What Is A Steward?
Verse twenty-six talks about the creation of man and how we are commanded to have dominion over all creatures of the earth, namely; fishes, fowls, cattle and creeping things. Moreover, we are responsible to take care of God’s creation. However, people had two attitudes in terms of being stewards.
First, acting as if we own the creations of the earth. When we have this type of character, we are being irresponsible for our God-given task – stewardship. Let me give you an example, underground dog fights. Dogs are trained and stressed in a very inhumane way.
The second attitude is elevating these creatures more than our fellow human beings. Did you know that there are 100+ animal hospitals in Canada, while there are only 16 Children’s Hospitals? Do not get me wrong, I love animals. However, if I were to select who to save between an animal and a person from a burning building, I would choose the latter.
The Perfect And Responsible Steward
Stewardship is not ownership, it is a responsibility to take care of the creatures God has entrusted to us. Further, stewardship is improving what can be cultivated and using the resources, not to excess.
The perfect example of stewardship is Jesus Christ. God has given Jesus Christ a task. And that is to save the wretched people on earth by His precious blood. Jesus has done this despite the hardships. In His ministry, He taught the people about the kingdom of the Father. Before His death, resurrection and ascension, Jesus made sure that we have the Comforter to guide us until His second coming, and that is the Holy Spirit.
Reflection
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.
- How do you understand stewardship?
- Where can you relate yourself, the first type of steward or the second?
- What are you doing to be a responsible steward?
- Do you follow Jesus’ ways as a steward? Accept Jesus Now.
- How do you teach others to be a good steward like Christ?
