How To Be Effective Instruments Of God

There is no greater honour than to be an instrument of God’s hands of leading one person out of the kingdom of Satan into the glorious light of Heaven.

– D.L. Moody

Why do other Christians (Bible-believing) exalt themselves? I have asked that question when I was still a Catholic and thought I was a Christian. Often I wonder why they act different and speak differently. I got my answer two-and-a-half years ago. When I experience firsthand the meaning of being born again, denying yourself and following Christ.

The Holy Spirit that convicted your heart to repent is the same Spirit who will change you to a new person. And how amazing is it to think that, that same Holy Spirit is the one who inspired the authors of the Bible, enabled the apostles to speak other languages, and stirred the hearts of the prophets to spread and teach God’s words.

Bible Reading

Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Ezra 1. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Proverbs 6:6-11 – How Is Laziness Affecting Your Spiritual Growth?

God’s Instruments

God is our Creator. He is sovereign, omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. Furthermore, He has a grand plan that each one of us has a specific role. We cannot pick our roles, but our Father uses us under His will. Like Jesus, whose mission was to save men from destruction. Similarly, we too have a mission here on earth.

Before Cyrus ruled Persia, the prophet Isaiah prophesied his reign (Isaiah 44:28) when he said, That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid. God already manifested His plan. That Cyrus has a purpose and will be His instrument to send the Israelites back to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple.

Cyrus acknowledged God’s sovereignty on Ezra 1:2 when he said, The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Time and time again God demonstrates His supremacy over us, not only to the Christians but also to non-believers. And this encourages me, even more, to serve His name and obey His will.

Main Purpose of an Instrument

So what is the purpose of the Instruments of God? One thing is certain, and that is to fulfill the Father’s will. Furthermore, He sends us out to different areas to minister to each other. Moreover, Jesus specified one commandment that each Christians should be doing and that is to spread the Good News to the ends of the earth (Mark 16:15-16).

When we do not share the saving works of Jesus Christ with others, we are not effectively doing our purpose. Additionally, based on what D.L. Moody said, we are letting people stay in the kingdom of the enemy. Leaving them to live in the darkness rather than in the light (1 John 1:5-7).

Let us take our purpose seriously and effectively. Jesus has chosen us to go bear fruits (John 15:16).

Reflection

This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV
  1. Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour? Accept Jesus Now.
  2. How do you see the work of the Holy Spirit in your life?
  3. What are the areas in your life that you think God uses you as His instruments?
  4. Are you fulfilling the great commission?
  5. How many people did you share the Gospel with?

Prayer

Our Father in heaven, powerful and mighty is your name. You have called us to follow you. We are sorry about our stubbornness and hard-headedness. May you forgive us for our sins (mention your sins) and bring us back to you. Let the Holy Spirit shed light on our life that we may walk in your direction.

O Lord, Jesus Christ, you are the Saviour of the earth You have saved us from the grasp of the enemy. May you deliver us from any evil and like you may we be able to walk in obedience and total surrender to God, the Father. Amen.

We pray in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

Erwina Gagin

Born and raised in a catholic family, I learned about God at an early age. I also studied in catholic schools which means I get to study the catholic traditions, practices and saints (deities). I grew up knowing God, Jesus, Mary and the saints and praying or venerating them. At a young age, I would regularly attend mass, pray devotionals to different saints and pray the rosary, which I thought were essentials to show one’s love and honour to God. But often times, I would still feel empty and uncertain of what lies ahead. I started reading the bible when I started to date my husband, with the purpose to show him that I can defend catholic teachings. But the more I study the scriptures the more I have questions about what I thought I know about my faith. It was in the year 2016 at the age of 27, I was born again. I cannot cite the exact date of my conversion as it happened in subtle manner. I know Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, guides me in studying God’s word to know the truth about Him.
