In Christ’s ascension, a King. And In His intercession a high priest.
– Martin Luther.
I have spent three months preparing for my first licensure examination. Moreover, vigils and prayer times were included in that three-month period. Furthermore, there was even a time that we have to do a 24-hour vigil, alternating between students in order not to break the chain of prayer. As nursing students that were going to take the most important exam in our lives, we pour out our hearts to God. At that time I thought that we have to do all the prayers that were taught to us for us to pass (as well as the review classes of course). However, I was wrong as it was our faith in Jesus and the will of God that helped us pass the exam. Furthermore, my contribution only accounts for a lesser percentage of the success of our exams. Thus, by calling to Jesus, He interceeded for us to the Father.
Bible Reading
Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Hebrews 7:25. Please, read our recent devotional from the 1st Letter of Thessalonians 5:17-18: How Frequently Do You Pray?
As The High Priest
In verse twenty-three, the author of Hebrews compared the eighty-four High Priest, starting from Aaron, and their works to that of Jesus Christ. Further, they have come short in comparison to Jesus Christ. For their offices ceased, the moment they died. In contrast, Jesus permanently accomplished the priestly function for He has defeated death. Zane Hodges wrote in his commentary, Christ can carry His saving work to completion.
John 17:1-26 is where we can read the prayer of Jesus as the High Priest. His prayer is charged with glorification to the Father and intentions for the people that were given to Him by the Father.
As The Perfect Intercessor
In verse twenty-five, Jesus is described as the perfect intercessor. The One who can save and bring us in union with the Father and that He always intercede for those who genuinely call out to Him.
Therefore, let us be in submission to the High Priest and intercessor that will never fail us. That always hears our prayers and pleas. Moreover, Christ is not in stone, wood, nor metal (Isaiah 37:19). Rather, He lives in the hearts, through the Holy Spirit, of those who believe in Him.
Reflection
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.

Prayer
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
