When we repent, God can restore what our pride and hard heart have wrecked.– Charles ‘Chuck’ Swindoll.
Before, I thought the confession of sins to the priest was enough to save me from the wages of my evil deeds. Furthermore, I felt that if I do not follow the Sacrament of Reconciliation my sins will not be forgiven. However, I also had a feeling that it is unnecessary. My study of the Holy Scriptures and the sermons I have heard from different Bible-teaching Pastors made me understand what true repentance is all about. And I was glad that I understood it before it was too late.
Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Matthew 27:4-5. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of John 14: 12-14: In Jesus’ Name Is Not A Formula For Worldly Wants
Judas Did Not Repent, But It Was Not Too Late
In the previous verse, we can see that Judas changed his mind when he saw the condemnation of Jesus (Matthew 27:3). He affirmed his evil deed and said, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood (Matthew 27:4). When he had said this, Jesus was not yet crucified. And therefore, it was not too late for him to repent. But, he failed to ask forgiveness from God in whom he has sinned against.
Judas was overwhelmed and greatly burdened by his sin that he hanged himself because of guilt. Paul described this guilt as a worldly one. Moreover, he reminded us that godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death (2 Corinthians 7:10). This guilt was what subdued Judas until it was too late for him to repent.
Repent Now Before It Is Too Late
Our life on earth is limited. Do not even think for a single second that you are young, healthy and therefore invincible because you are not. Our days are numbered by God, who created us. Do not waste it until it is too late to repent and get right with Him.
Let the guilt you feel about your sins be a driving force that leads you to repent and turn to Jesus for saving. Moreover, Jesus Christ is the hope for us. He has died in our place. When we repent and believe in Him, we will have eternal life in unity with the Triune God.
Let us not wait when it is all too late. Receive the saving grace of God through His Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Accept Jesus Now.
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.

Almighty Father, who art in heaven. Praise and glory to you who is just and merciful. We confess now our sins (mention your sins) and ask for your mercy. Grant us, Holy Spirit, a change of heart and lead us to you.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your sacrifice on the cross. We thank you for ransoming us from our sins and granting us eternal life with the Father. May we continue to walk with you and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. So that when our time comes we may be able to sing with the choir of angels praising your Holy Name.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
