We need to learn that truth consists not in correct doctrine, but in correct doctrine plus the inward enlightenment of the Holy Spirit.– A.W. Tozer.
There are moments in our life that we do not know what to do. We seek the advice of the people we trust. Sometimes we get good bits of advice, other times not. When Jesus saved me, I clung more to the Word of God. Furthermore, my prayers always involved the enlightenment from the Holy Spirit to help me understand the Scriptures. His words have helped me through the hardest points in my life, and never once did His Words fail me.
Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Psalm 119:18. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Proverbs 20:9: Are You Professing As A Good Person?
Enlightenment through the Holy Spirit
Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm and chapter in the Bible. The Psalmist was unknown, although scholars have suggested it could be Daniel, David, or Ezra (The MacArthur Study Bible). Moreover, one thing that is noted on this Psalm, that the Psalmist was under great pressure and needed the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit to understand the law (word of God).
In verse 18, we read how the Psalmist prayed to God to open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. He knew that without the guidance of God through His Spirit, he will not understand the law. This scenario is still true for us to this day. A lot of us may claim that we have read the Bible cover to cover. But did not understand God’s words until the Holy Spirit enlighten us. Or will never understand it because of intellectual pride.
Worldly enlightenment, are not from the Spirit
Yoga, chakras, meditation, empty yourself, are a few of the enlightenment the world offers. However, these types of enlightenment are not based on the truth and not beneficial for our eternal life. Further, it is dangerous for us, for these provide ways for Satan and his demons to torment and afflict us in methods we cannot even understand.
Paul wrote, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints (Ephesians 1:17-18). And this, too, my brothers and sisters, is my prayer for all of you who read this devotional. That the Holy Spirit will provide you with understanding and knowledge when you read the Bible. And most especially, that your hearts will be stirred to repentance and acceptance of Jesus Christ as your Saviour. Accept Jesus Now.
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.

Lord, I’m here today with open hands and an open heart, ready to depend on you to help me through the day and all it will bring my way. Help me be like Nehemiah, help me come to you for guidance, strength, provision, and protection. As I face tough choices and hard situations, help me remember my belovedness, help me remember that I am Your child and Your representative to the world around me. Help me live today in a way that brings honour to Your holy name.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
