The Love That Jesus Taught Us

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

– Jesus Christ – John 13:34

Love is innate to all of us. We love everyone that is good to us. Also, those who love us. But do you think it is still loving if you let others continue to live worldly lives?

Bible Reading

Today’s devotional reading is from the 1st Letter of Paul to Thessalonians 4:9. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Zechariah 4:6: Not By Might Or Power, But By The Holy Spirit (link please)

Jesus love and taught us to love

God is love. And with that, we know as His creations we are taught how to love. Paul pointed out to the Thessalonians that they know how to love, for they have received it through the teachings and study of the scriptures. This is the same for us. Moreover, we are shown how to love through the Scriptures. The entire context of the Bible is evidence of God’s love for us. Jesus emphasized this as well, as written by the Apostle John in John 13:34.

How you share the love of Christ with others?

There are lots of ways how we can share the love of Christ with others. The most important form is to let others know about His sacrificial love on the cross at Calvary. When we share this with others, we show that we love them because we present them with the reality and gravity of our sins.

Our sins block us from accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. And when we do not accept Him we will not achieve eternal life with Him and the Father in heaven. In simple words, when you do not tell others about our sinfulness, you are letting them walk in the road that leads to eternal damnation. And that is not a sign of your love towards them.

Reflection

This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.
  1. Who are the people you love?
  2. Do they love you back?
  3. How do you define love?
  4. What are the ways you show your love for others?
  5. Have you accepted Jesus and His sacrificial love for all? Accept Jesus Now.
  6. What are the ways you show your love to God?
  7. Reflect on the instances when you forgot or omit to point to others the way to Jesus? How do you feel?

Prayer

Loving God, fill my heart with the love that you freely give. Make love my first and last thoughts. May I love others and freely give to them. Make my spirit a spirit of joy, happiness, and love for both my friends and my enemies. Help me love as abundantly as you have loved me. Amen.

Erwina Gagin

Born and raised in a catholic family, I learned about God at an early age. I also studied in catholic schools which means I get to study the catholic traditions, practices and saints (deities). I grew up knowing God, Jesus, Mary and the saints and praying or venerating them. At a young age, I would regularly attend mass, pray devotionals to different saints and pray the rosary, which I thought were essentials to show one’s love and honour to God. But often times, I would still feel empty and uncertain of what lies ahead. I started reading the bible when I started to date my husband, with the purpose to show him that I can defend catholic teachings. But the more I study the scriptures the more I have questions about what I thought I know about my faith. It was in the year 2016 at the age of 27, I was born again. I cannot cite the exact date of my conversion as it happened in subtle manner. I know Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, guides me in studying God’s word to know the truth about Him.
