Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.
Mark Twain
“…hundreds of these adult converts have been reclaimed after a brief sojourn in the Enemy’s camp and are now with us. All the habits of the patient (human), both mental and bodily, are still in our favor“. This is an excerpt from the book The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. The book is about a senior demon, Screwtape, giving advises to his nephew, Wormwood, on how to tempt human. Further, the Enemy that the demons are pertaining to here is God. The devil and his demons are trying their hardest to tempt people from getting to know Christ or growing in Christ.
Here are some of the reasons why our habits are in favor to the devil and his demons. Firstly, because of the fall of man (Genesis 3) we inherited the sin of our first parents, Adam and Eve. Furthermore, it is written in Romans, Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned (5:12 KJV). Therefore, we do not have an escape of being sinful for we are born in sin (Psalm 51:5).
Secondly, the devil is the prince of this world. According to the second letter of Paul to Corinthians, Satan, being the god of this world have blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light if the gospel and glory of Christ (4:4).
Scripture
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. — Romans 12:2
Observation
Yesterday, we reflected on the purpose of the Ten Commandments. One thing that inhibits us to see our sinfulness is our adaptation to the world. We tend to follow the ideals and practices of what is presented to us, through social media and other mediums. And we do not think twice or reflect on it.
Lies, covetousness, fornication and even murder are being slipped to our minds in different ways that are sneaky and deceitful. We can rationalize all we want that there is nothing wrong with abortion, premarital sex, and “white lies”. Nonetheless, all these are sins and an offense to God’s law.
As what Paul said to the Ephesians, we should 22to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness (v.22-24).
How do we do this? By dying in our sins and living in Christ. Moreover, we should repent from our sins, accept Jesus to be our Lord and Savior and immerse yourselves with the work of God. The scriptures will be your armor against the evil ones (Ephesians 6:11 KJV).
Application
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV
- Can you differentiate your ways to that of the world?
- How attached are you on this world?
- Are you willing to serve Christ?
- Who is the prince of your life?
- How do you serve your prince?
Prayer
Our Father in heaven, You are holy and worthy of all praises. We thank You for Jesus, Your Son, who saved us from Your wrath brought about by our sins. Thank You for the Holy Spirit leading and guiding us everyday. We ask Lord, to bless us with wisdom and discernment that we may see the world in Your perspective. Likewise, may we avoid things and acts that are not pleasing to Your eyes.
All these we pray in Jesus Christ name, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.
