If God would have wanted us to live in a permissive society, He would have given us Ten Suggestions and not Ten Commandments.
– Zig Ziglar.
Ask the people around you and get their opinion about what is the role of the Ten Commandments. Some of the answers you might get are the following: (1) it was given to the Israelites by Moses, (2) it is a set of moral guidelines, (3) it is only applicable to the people before and (4) I have obeyed some of it. But what is the Law really, and are we still under it?
Bible Reading
Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Nehemiah 8:10. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Psalm107:6-7: God Delivers The People Who Cry To Him
Understanding The Law
Mirror. That is what the Law is about. The Ten Commandments is the attitude that a person should have to please God. However, I am not talking about being able to obey 3 or 5 out of the ten. Since God is holy and pure, a person must follow ten out of the Ten Commandments. So, why does it exists when it is impossible to obey? Go back to the first word in this paragraph.
When Ezra have read the Book of the Law and the scribes and Levites explained them to the congregation, the Israelites wept and mourned because they understood their sinfulness (Nehemiah 8:9). Moreover, the Law shows us that we are not holy and not even close to being good.
Rejoice In The Law
Acknowledgment of our being wretched creates the understanding that we need Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour (Accept Jesus Now). Hence, do not weep and feel hopeless when you understand the Law. Furthermore, keep in mind what Nehemiah told the Israelites, And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength (today’s verse).
Jesus Christ has fulfilled the Law on our behalf and has sacrificed His own life for us to have eternal life with Him and the Father. Let us, therefore, live with a repentant heart, have faith in our Lord, and walk with the Spirit every day of our lives. Additionally, let others know about what Jesus has done for you and me.
Reflection
This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.
- What is your understanding about the Law?
- Why is it necessary for us to know about it?
- How do you apply it in your life?
- Are you able to follow all Ten of them?
- Have you acknowledge that you are a sinner?
- Are you rejoicing for the saving grace of God, through Christ?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, we adore and glorify Your name. We thank You for Your gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank You for the Law you gave to Moses, to show us that we are sinners and not worthy of Your goodness. But because of Your great love, You sent Jesus to save us. To be in our place and received Your wrath.
We thank You Lord Jesus for saving us and sending us the Holy Spirit to guide us as we walk with You towards the Father. May You call and awaken others who do not know You yet and may it be Your will that they will also receive Your gift of salvation.
All this we pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
