God saves

Lost Sheep

Every week we will dive in one chapter from the Old and New Testament. We will study the scripture and reflect on the verse(s) that touched us the most. You may notice that I skip chapters. This is to provide you your personal time to read the other chapters during the week. Remember, reading the Bible is not just to memorize verses, but it is most importantly to get to know God personally.

Scripture

Genesis 19 / Matthew 18

Brief Overview:

Genesis 19: The story of Sodom and Gomorrah can be found on this chapter in Genesis. How the people in this city lived in sin and suffered God’s wrath. Leaving Lot’s family unscathed for Abraham has asked God to spare him, and because of Lot’s act of saving the 2 angels sent by God to the city. The chapter ended with Lot and his daughters sinning against God.

Matthew 1: Talks about Jesus’ teaching regarding humility. According to Jesus, we should be like the children in order to enter into heaven. Another lesson He taught was about the punishment of offenders, that people who offend God will be punished. But since God is merciful, He gives the offenders time to repent and if they do not they will be punished in accordance to their sins.

Aside from the offenders, Jesus talked about the other side of the story. He addressed the offended brothers and sister, He advised on how to manage the issue when someone has hurt you and what you should do to resolve the conflicts. Lastly, the parable of the lost sheep, which may be quite familiar to you. It talks about how one sinner who repented gives so much joy to God.

Observation

Gen. 19:16 KJV “…the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth and set him without (outside) the city.”

Matt. 18:11 KJV “For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.”

Application

The purpose of Jesus’ coming to earth is clear. He came to earth to redeem us from our sins, that through His death and resurrection we will be cleansed from sins and will have a chance to have eternal life when we profess and believe that He is our Lord and Savior.

Aside from being loving, God is also merciful and like Him we should practice forgiveness. Forgiveness is not only talking about us asking it from God (which is important) but also we are called to ask for forgiveness from others and to give forgiveness to those who have offended us. Having a clean conscience and heart will make our accepting Jesus in our hearts a “bit easier”. This will allow the Holy Spirit to direct us to the direction God has planned for us.

Nothing comes easy in this world, Jesus said; “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23 KJV). Following Jesus is not going to be a walk in the park, but rest assured that He will be there for you on your hard times (even if you do not understand) and He will direct you to Him and will save you.

Prayer

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Thank you for saving us, even though we are not worthy of Your love. You are unchanging, saving us constantly from sins and we thank you for this. Show us your mercy oh Lord and a forgiving heart that we may forgive ourselves and others. May we show Your love to others and may we be instrument of your peace everywhere we are. All this we ask through Your Holy Name. Amen.
