Do You Seek Great Things For Yourself?

When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives.

– Ezra Taft Benson

Do not know what to decide and where to go? I am with you on this situation. This world is a very tricky place to navigate. Especially when we try to navigate it based on our worldly desires and wants. In these situations, I cannot help but reflect on God’s sovereignty above all. He already knows that His creations will have a hard time deciding and sojourning this life. Therefore, He left us the Bible and sent the Holy Spirit to teach us His words. In today’s devotional Jeremiah asks an important question,  do you seek great things for yourself?

Bible Reading

Today’s devotional reading is from the Book of Jeremiah 45:5. Please, read our recent devotional from the Book of Exodus 33:13: God Will Direct Us To His Favour

Do not seek selfishly and fall into pride

The prophet Jeremiah wants us to reflect on his question. Moreover, he warns us that when we do seek them (selfishly seeking great things), the Lord will bring disaster upon all flesh. God is not pleased with prideful people. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit does not reside in their hearts. And what do you have in your life if you do not have Christ in it? Nothing. You may have a lot of worldly riches, but all these are temporary.

Seek God first

The scriptures say, But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you (Matthew 6:33). Seeking God first should be the priority of everyone. Not because things will be added unto you, but because His grace is enough (2 Corinthians 12:9). Furthermore, no matter where you are in life, you are rest assured that He is there with you to go through hardships. So do not delay in seeking God my dear brothers and sisters. Do it now before it is too late!

Reflection

This is the time for your journaling. Reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to test your faith and your walk with Christ.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? — 2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV.
  1. What do you seek in your life?
  2. Do you seek Christ?
  3. Have you accepted Jesus Christ in your life?
  4. What is your reflection on Jeremiah’s question?

Prayer

Lord, I pray you would move the Spirit more boldly in my life. I know that any sin can grieve and diminish the voice of the Spirit, and I pray against the temptation to sin. Help me crave your presence more than I crave sin. Help me grow in the fruit of the Holy Spirit and so walk closer with Yourself. I pray for guidance from your Spirit- let your will and promises always be a meditation of my heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Born and raised in a catholic family, I learned about God at an early age. I also studied in catholic schools which means I get to study the catholic traditions, practices and saints (deities). I grew up knowing God, Jesus, Mary and the saints and praying or venerating them. At a young age, I would regularly attend mass, pray devotionals to different saints and pray the rosary, which I thought were essentials to show one’s love and honour to God. But often times, I would still feel empty and uncertain of what lies ahead. I started reading the bible when I started to date my husband, with the purpose to show him that I can defend catholic teachings. But the more I study the scriptures the more I have questions about what I thought I know about my faith. It was in the year 2016 at the age of 27, I was born again. I cannot cite the exact date of my conversion as it happened in subtle manner. I know Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, guides me in studying God’s word to know the truth about Him.
