Fear Not Verse of the Day – 1 Peter 5:7 – Fear of Pride

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Fear of Pride

We produce this sense of ownership not only by pride but by confusion. We teach them not to notice the different senses of the possessive pronoun…” excerpt from The Screwtape Letters (C.S. Lewis). Me, myself and I. How often do you use or think of these pronouns? I bet like me, more than we want to acknowledge. The apostle Peter reminds us to cast all our anxieties to God who cares for us. Why tell us this? Because we all have the tendency to have pride and want to control everything in our life. This portion of the letter of St. Peter teaches us to be humble. Humility and not pride are one of the many fruits of the Holy Spirit. The best example of humility is our Lord Jesus. In Philippians we read, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (v. 6-8 ESV).

Therefore, let us confess our sinful pride and practice humility. Let us submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit daily to teach us to walk in humility and submission to the will of our Father in heaven.

Prayer

Our Father in Heaven, praise be to your holy name. We thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ, who gave us an example of how to be humble. Grant us, Holy Spirit, the humility not to walk in pride but in submission to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In whose name we pray this. Amen.

Born and raised in a catholic family, I learned about God at an early age. I also studied in catholic schools which means I get to study the catholic traditions, practices and saints (deities). I grew up knowing God, Jesus, Mary and the saints and praying or venerating them. At a young age, I would regularly attend mass, pray devotionals to different saints and pray the rosary, which I thought were essentials to show one’s love and honour to God. But often times, I would still feel empty and uncertain of what lies ahead. I started reading the bible when I started to date my husband, with the purpose to show him that I can defend catholic teachings. But the more I study the scriptures the more I have questions about what I thought I know about my faith. It was in the year 2016 at the age of 27, I was born again. I cannot cite the exact date of my conversion as it happened in subtle manner. I know Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, guides me in studying God’s word to know the truth about Him.
